  • Dan, I'm jumping in mid-thread so forgive me if I'm missing something, but let me highly recommend an early F5. I had one a few years ago, and they will absolutely keep up with the 600's. Should be able to find one in pretty good shape between $2.5-$3k.

I spent 13 seconds searching, and came up with this: http://eauclaire.craigslist.org/rvs/2582846438.html

Another F5 for you Dan.  You can email there or PM me.  I bought it last winter and like JB said, it is great and was an awesome sled to learn on.  the 03(maybe 04 too) have additional power(105 hp) from the 05+ (85hp).  I listed at 3500 because the mpls/st paul ones were all 3500-4000 but I would give a ZG discount!

I want to, but I want to on a 700-1000 not the 500.  The f5 was great to learn on and is awesome for trails/ditches but In Lakeville we have a lot of lakes/farmland so I want something bigger.

  • Dan,
    98 xc700 for $700
    http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/dak/rvs/2655437997.html

Killin me smalls.  These are still outside of what I was told to bother with so I'm hesitant... and poor.  I don't even like sleds that much.  I rode a few around a lake last year but never seen what gloriousness they have to offer, just keep hearing about it.

and there's no way all of the sleds you're posting are great deals, but hell if I know.  WHo else knows sled prices round here?

  • I paid $900 for my '96 440 at the end of last year and love it. Granted, it's not a typical 440, but generally more CCs is more $$. If mine wasn't the SP model then 6-700 would be more appropriate.

As far as posting /all/ of them?  Not even close.  Go poke around CL if you want. There are lots of sleds out there priced in the ridiculous to acceptable range that I don't bother posting.

From my personal experiences and what I've read (and keep in mind, this is basically Polaris only experience) the BIG jump was in '96 when they released the Xtra-10 rear suspension.  Around they same time they had Xtra-12, but that was much softer and oriented towards trails rather than being beat on.  The Xtra-10 is great at soaking up big bumps/landings and still has a good top end.  Yes, the newer stuff can be better (Polaris's Edge suspension is great, but you have to get out of my price range to get into an edge chassis that isn't beat to shit. The FAST M10 is good too, but it's a little softer and more oriented towards trail riding too.)
But for me, the kicker is that with Polaris (again, I don't know about the other brands) all the newer suspensions can be bolted into the older sleds. So if you find a good chassis with a good engine and don't like the ride, you can drill 4 holes and bolt in a newer rear suspension.

The 700 twin in that sled is bulletproof.  Let it warm up before you thrash it and clean the carbs once a year and it will run forever and put down consistent reliable power.  Yeah there is faster out there, and yeah there is a better ride out there, but in the sub $2500 range a Polaris twin is the way to go IMO.  If you want top end speed for drag or lake racing a triple will be faster due just to the better cylinder filling at high RPMs, but for all around use these late 90s Polaris' are pretty damn good.

and with that 700, if you snap it up now you can ride it for a while and if you don't like it give it a good wash and sell it while there's snow on the ground and you'll turn a profit.

  • Looks like a decent deal, we paid $500 for a two place trailer, dunno what single trailers are worth though.
