My Grand Rapids snowmobile trip.
« on: February 11, 2014, 08:31:47 AM »
  • Leaving on another trip to Grand Rapids. Leaving soon right after this post. So we will be ridding for 3  days and coming back on Friday. I had 6 rooms all pool side set aside for the group. 10 planed on going. As of right now only 4 of us die hards going now. They started calling Sunday night to give me a long story of why they are not going. Mostly their wife. I guess we know who runs their house.
It is -13 out as I post this. Getting to feel normal. Could still be about the same when we get there today. But the trails in the should be in great shape. I bet we don't see any one on them during the week.
I will keep you posted on how it goes. Who knows there could be drama. It makes it all fun.

I bought it to ride. Not to look at.

  • Snap some pics and keep these updates coming.  We'll have to rename these as Vince's Sled Stories.  They're always entertaining.  I had this written in my calendar but work is overwhelming
But I don't want greeting cards. I want to get fucked up on trampolines
Pretty much everything that DVS_DAN said is correct.

  • Today we saw at least 40 deer on the trail. And very one of them had to jump in frog of me. And 6 of them turned around to do it twice. What the hell is wrong with that animal. Should of had armybikr with to shoot the dam thinks.

  • Had to keep my speed down to 60 and less for most of the day because there was so many. They are hard to see most of the time even when they are just 20ft off the side of the trail. Of course you slow down but they are like smart booms. They want to get you. They look right at you then take off. Know the DNR wants to feed them.

  • Sometimes you just have to stop and take in Gods creation. I am glad we have cameras to record it to show all our friends. I only wish that more of you were there to share it with me.
If you can see there isn't a mark from another sled on the trail. Some trails were groomed the night before and had 4" of snow over it or the trail was just groomed that morning after the snow stopped. Some times it is like ridding in the clouds. And when you shut your sled off you are so far from nowhere that you can hear a pin drop when it hits the snow.

  • Well I am back home now. I was running out of money. So anyway we head out Tuesday morning. Everything is ready to go. Jump in the truck and down the freeway we go. Well I guess I was brain dead because 2 miles don the road it hits me. Dam we didn't stop at the bank. Why do we need to do that my buddy says. My credit card got hacked and the account is closed for now until I get a new one so I need to get cash. Back we go. Dammit anyways. We leave the bank and Oh Shit I forgot something else. Dammit what now. I forgot my hard case for my glasses. I have to have them to put my glassed in my pocket or they will break. I have done this before. So we leave my house now a half hour late.
On the way up we meet a friend at the Black Bear Casino for lunch and all you can eat buffet. We left there and we couldn't breath we were so full. Now on to Grand Rapids and to the motel. Very nice place. Pool, Hot tub, dining hall, convention rooms. It was a nice place and right on the trail. Our rooms had 2 doors. On to the pool and the other went outside to our sleds which were just 20ft away. Does it get any better.

  • We decide to make a loop of going North, then East, then South for a long ways and the West and back up to home base. We had already top off with gas but there was a gas station right on the trail. We passed them and kept going. There was at least 7 or 8 of them all on very good sleds. Well my other friends just knew I was going to stop and let them all by. Yep I did. 2 of them stop and thought we were with them. LOL. Any way I gave them a 1 minute head start and off I went after them. Dam these guys were hauling ass. I didn't see any of them for some time not even snow dust. I am thinking I gave them to much of a head start. Now I wasn't going as fast as I could go but I was going fast. Came to a clearing and I could see for about a mile. And there they were. Alright! I cranked it. We are come to some range towns and there are some side streets and driveways to cross. These guys are blowing right threw the stop signs and so am I. I just got on there asses and what the hell. I was going over 70 and a cop went by on the highway dong I would say 85+. I think we were along side highway 169. I know what he was doing. He was racing up ahead of us to meet us at the road crossing. I have had this happen before. this is how they do spot check as well. As we go a little farther we go up a hill and the leader see what is going on and we stop. We wait for him to leave. He did and it took him about 10 minutes to do so. Oh well you win some and you loose some. We win. LOL. We later came to a fork in the road and we went are own way. I think they were on there way to Ely. Good ride for them. I am sure they had a great day.

  • Time to get lunch and gas. We stop in a town called Jacobson. Says there is gas and food there. And there was. The bar and grill only had hamburgers. The others wanted salads. The bar maid says to go to the gas station because you can get salads there. It is a superette gas station. So you would have to buy everything and them make you own and throw the rest away. What the hell. And the only take cash. Back to the bar and burgers it is. Well they don't take credit there either. I was using my ipod and ask do you have wifi? What's that. Do you have internet. Oh no she says. As others came in you could hear they didn't all graduate from high school. It was entertaining. That burger was a one pounder. Couldn't even eat half of it, but it was good. Off we go again and we run into some other guys trying to figure out where the hell they are. They are both on fumes and want to know where there is gas. One of them is getting nervous and is looking at that gas can I bring with. I said I would give him the gas if they run out but not before because we are all going the same way. So I followed them and in about 5 mile there was a sign that said gas one mile. Off they went and off we went. We had a great ride the rest of the day. Just under 200 miles for the day.
It was such a great day. All the trails we were on were groomed. Like I said it just doesn't get any better. And the end of day one of ridding.

  • So we wake up the next morning and there is 4" of fresh snow on the ground and it is still snowing. The weatherman says to stay home. To them if it rains stay inside. If it is cold and windy stay inside. And if it snows yep you guessed it stay inside. As it turns out this was one of the best days of snowmobiling I have ever had. It was just great. I am glad everyone listen to the weatherman and stayed inside.
We start out and right away the gal that was with sled lock up. Motor is running but it wouldn't move. The only thing she know is it stopped moving. Her husband started working on it while I and Dave look at maps. We have to because the other guy has a GPS. And yesterday he never knew where we were and he for sure isn't going to know today. LOL.
So Dave and I have a route all planed. 170 to 200 mile day. Should be a good one for sure if we can get Judy's sled working. So anyway back to Judy's sled. He doesn't know what it is doing except the clutch doesn't move. I said take the belt of and let look at things. Start it up. Primary looks like it works. He says no it is not the belt doesn't move. Ok put the belt back on and start it up I want to see this. We do that and nothing moves. Ok shut the machine off. Does the big clutch move I ask. How do I know. Well turn it with your fucking hand. No! It doesn't move. We look at the track and see nothing. Lets try something. Start it up and run it backwards. What the hell is that going to do. Not a dam thing I said just do it. So she did and it took a little bit of gas to get it to do something. Now I was lifting the back end up when she was doing this and the machine started shaking. I thought there was a gear box inside and all the gears were exploding. She stop it right away. Turns out there was so much ice in the tunnel that it got caught and locked up the track. I never seen such big pieces before and so many. We had to pick them all up and carry them off the parking lot. Ok lets get going.
All I can say is the rest of the day was great. I was just floating on top of the snow. Like flying in the clouds. Just so fast and soft. Trails all groomed the night before. What planning and no one else out. Well there were some deer. Only one jumped within 20ft of me. Need that dam gun. We road the less used trails for most of the day going North until about 3pm. Then we got on the Taconite Trail to head back for the last 70 miles. This trail really rocks. No deer I don't know why. 100 mph speeds were great. Sled was air born it seemed most of the time. We got back just before sunset.
Dam the trip has come to and end.
There was something else that happened but a video of that would be a lot better. To many words to tell it all. But is will say it took a lot of digging  and a tow rope to get it out. A lot of swearing also. Wasn't me I was laughing. Maybe why there was a lot of swearing. Shit you go snowmobiling your going to get stuck. I wish I had taken a picture at least. But I knew he was going to be mad by the time Dave and I got back there to help. I think the last word was when we got his sled out was his wife. I AM NOT RIDING WITH THAT ASSHOLE! That is the first time in all the years I have know them. About 15 years that I have seen her mad. Yep me and Dave will remember this trip.

I am going out riding again on Sunday the 16th If anyone wants to join me. I will be riding the trails I help set up. Dakota Trails. I will be at the trail head. The park and ride at Rich Valley Park. Trail number 95 on the start map in Inver Grove Heights at 10 AM.
