Polaris is on point - Timbersleds acquired by Polaris
« on: April 23, 2015, 10:54:34 AM »
  • http://www.bizjournals.com/twincities/news/2015/04/22/polaris-buys-snow-bike-maker-timbersled.html

Polaris Industries Inc. Wednesday announced it has acquired Timbersled Products Inc. small manufacturer of snow motorcycles, or snow bikes.

It bought the privately-owned company based in Sandport, Idaho, for an undisclosed sum. The company was founded in 2001, making front- and rear-suspension systems for mountain snowmobiles. In 2010 it introduced a motorcycle conversion system that attaches a sled and track to an existing motorcycle frame.

Timbersled's Mountain Horse motorcycle conversion kits cost between $5,300 and $6,500 each, according to Polaris.

"Timbersled has created a compelling product and revolutionized the sport of snow biking, and we are excited to see what they can accomplish with access to Polaris’ considerable engineering, manufacturing and distribution capabilities,” said Scott Wine, Polaris Chairman & CEO in a press release.

Polaris (NYSE: PII) plans to keep Timbersled's brand the same and says the operations and 40 employees, will remain near Sandport. Timbersled has about 150 dealers.

Polaris manufactures motorcycles under the brand names Indian and Victory and snowmobiles under the Polaris brand.

Medina-based Polaris had 2014 sales of $4.5 billion and Timbersled's revenues were "well less than 1 percent" of that, according to a fact sheet provided by Polaris about the deal.

The acquisition should slightly boost Polaris' income in 2015.

Pretty much everything that DVS_DAN said is correct.

  • Yup, it was pretty awesome to hear that announcement yesterday, especially considering I watched that video on youtube less than 24 hours before haha.

That video definitely made me wanna buy one, but, I'd like to see how well they perform in ditches, trails, and Minnesota areas since I'm not about to travel out West on a regular basis.

Im not kidding our normal group would have mentally devastated this girl. Im talking years of therapy to even be able to tie her shoes again. She was nice enough girl but she was in over her head.

  • I think Minnesota would have to pass legislation to allow dirt bikes in ditches first.

My guess is that they wouldn't turn into corners very well.  The track wouldn't make contact, like those bikes with wide-ass tires in the rear.  They wee running them in snowcross at the end of the video though

  • In MN they are not allowed on any snowmobile trail. Only snowmobiles are. Not even you walking is allowed. This was talked about at the last DNR meeting just 2 weeks ago. A snowmobile by definition has 2 skies not one.

Are four-wheelers or RZRs allowed on any trails in the Winter?  I imagine they would screw up the trail pretty good, so likely not?

It will be interesting!  I can see them making a snowbike and definately using MV Agusta technology.  Polaris is doing some crazy things.

  • Rode a bike with the timber sled set up out west. Very nimble in the trees. Feels like riding a stand up jetski.

As for the MN trails, not allowed. S X S and atvs are not allowed either.

I believe that MN is stupid about somethings.  I've seen a few UTV's driving on city streets.  There is a Guy with a 4 Seater Polaris Ranger driving around.  When did they become street legal in MN or does it depend on the county or city?

City by city. I know ATV trail use in Washington County is banned.

Well this was in downtown Mound!  I know the guy rents jet ski's on Lake Minnetonka and he was using that to gas them up at the Gas Station about 1 mile away from his shop.

  • Polaris bit off more than they could chew?

That's kind of lame.  We lose out on that hometown built feel, but they aren't idiots when it comes to business decisions.  They probably make more profit on one Indian than three Victories, haa.
