Track Talk
« on: January 16, 2017, 10:12:10 AM »
  • I could probably use a new track on my Cat (2002 ZR 600 EFI), but I'm wondering what to get?  There are a ton of options available, lug height and styles of track.  Should I bother with a used track since they usually aren't bigger than 7/8" tall lugs?
But I don't want greeting cards. I want to get fucked up on trampolines
Pretty much everything that DVS_DAN said is correct.

  • 1.25" lug track is a good trail track.

I think that is about the max for clearance on the ZR 600 too.  Do you think it will be noticeably different from a 3/4" or 1" lug track?  Still contemplating the idea of paying for a new one...

Yes, way better traction on trail and better off trail as well compared to a 3/4" lug track!

  • Is there a difference between dirt bike tires. Or even street bike tires. You bet there is. 1.25" all the way. Anything less is a waist of time and money. And get a track designed for the trail.

Perfect, I think it might be worth the extra money.  Looking over track info, it's very difficult to determine what you'll get when you order.  Track companies appear to deem 1.25" to include the belt, yet people say lug height is tip to the flat surface of the belt.  How the hell do I know if I'm ordering the right track for my sled?  I could see myself ordering a 1.25", and ending up with just a 1" lug.

Any input for what kind of track to order, like a Camoplast Ripsaw?

Me personally, I have never used a better track for on trail than the Cobra 1.352"

That matches my info: 121" long, 15" wide, 48/2.52 pitch

It looks like the Ripsaw is more durable, and better for hard pack trails.  Most of my riding would be the river, lake, and trails.  I don't foresee much powder riding in my future.  I will likely add studs for all of the lake riding, so that may lean me towards a Ripsaw?

And then I find this comment, ugh:
The boys at Tracksusa have ran the Ripsaw and Cobra on the same sleds and found for hardpack the Ripsaw is better. For anything else the fully clipped Cobra is superior.
They found much better acceleration and straight line control (much less fish tailing compared to the Ripsaw)
I had a Ripsaw on my Yami Viper and it was ok. Playing on the lakes and on worn trails it was not the greatest.
I am swapping the the 1" Hacksaw out of my 1100 LXR na for the fully clipped Cobra (no studs).
Give tracksusa a call. They test different tracks constantly.

  • Okay, I like the Cobra since I have a lot of untouched snow on the river and lake, and I want more performance/fun factor in the powder.  Really, I'll be fine with whatever on the trails.  They aren't very hard packed anyways.  Now, to find the cheapest price for a Cobra...

  • The Cobra has been purchased! Ugh new prices... Thanks for the input folks!

My neighbor's '97 RMK hauls, and I found out yesterday he has about 1.75" long lugs. Hopefully that's all it will take to help my sled scoot too

I wonder how he has it geared and clutched.
